Between symptom onset and final diagnosis, 42.6% (n=63) of participants reported a delay of 5 months or more, and 16.9% (n=25) waited longer than 12 months. Eventually, 91% (n=134) were referred to a paediatric rheumatologist and 63.5% (n=94) were seen within 4 weeks from initial referral. More than half the respondents felt that general practitioners (GPS) and general paediatricians were not aware of RD. Overall, respondents felt that improved knowledge of PR diseases among GPS, improved access to PR clinics, improved educational materials for patients and families, access to speciality rheumatology nurses and coordinated rheumatology teams would have significantly improved the experience of their child's disease. Conclusions: Children with RD in NSW still experience significant delays from symptom onset to final diagnosis through consultations with multiple healthcare professionals. Multidisciplinary team care was not the norm for this patient group, despite established national and international management standards. What is known about the topic? Early diagnosis and management by a multidisciplinary team is the gold standard in PR management. Delays in diagnosis may significantly impair the outcomes of children diagnosed with RD, with reduced quality of life, increased pain level and worse long-term prognosis. What does this paper add? Children diagnosed with RD in NSW endure significant delays from symptom onset until a final diagnosis is made, with multiple consultations with different healthcare professionals. When the referral to PR services in NSW is made, RD children are mostly seen within 4 weeks, faster than other international standards. GPS and paediatric rheumatologists in NSW helped improve the children's and their family's experience of the diagnosis and treatment of a rheumatic condition and better informed them using appropriate educational materials. What are the implications for practitioners' This paper provides new evidence to practitioners to increase their knowledge of the current experiences and expectation of the paediatric rheumatology care in NSW.]]> Thu 26 Apr 2018 14:45:52 AEST ]]> Interventions to prevent or cease electronic cigarette use in children and adolescents https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:53994 Thu 25 Jan 2024 13:10:42 AEDT ]]> Emergency Department Initiated Mental Health Interventions for Young People https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46518 Thu 24 Nov 2022 16:25:47 AEDT ]]> Age of Alcohol Initiation and Progression to Binge Drinking in Adolescence: A Prospective Cohort Study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43039 4 standard drinks on a single occasion), and (ii) the total number of alcoholic drinks consumed in the past year, adjusted for a range of potential child, parent, family, and peer covariates. Results: Fifty percent of adolescents reported alcohol use and 36% reported bingeing at wave 5 (mean age 16.9 years), and the mean age of initiation to alcohol use for drinkers was 15.1 years. Age of initiation was significantly associated with binge drinking and total quantity of alcohol consumed in unadjusted and adjusted models. Age of first drunkenness was associated with total quantity of alcohol consumed in unadjusted models but not adjusted models and was not associated with subsequent bingeing. Conclusions: Initiating alcohol use earlier in adolescence is associated with an increased risk of binge drinking and higher quantity of consumption in late secondary school, supporting an argument for delaying alcohol initiation for as long as possible to reduce the risk for problematic use in later adolescence and the alcohol-related harms that may accompany this use.]]> Thu 24 Aug 2023 09:26:02 AEST ]]> Integrated Occupational Therapy Camp for Children with Regulation/Sensory Processing Differences: Preliminary Evaluation https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:49989 Thu 22 Jun 2023 13:44:40 AEST ]]> Implementing resistance training in secondary schools: a cluster randomized controlled trial https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36287 -1. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a school-based intervention focused on resistance training (RT) for adolescents. Methods: The "Resistance Training for Teens" intervention was evaluated using a cluster-randomized, controlled trial with 607 adolescents (50.1% girls; 14.1 T 0.5 yr) from 16 secondary schools. Teachers were trained to deliver the intervention, which included the following: (i) an interactive student seminar; (ii) a structured physical activity program, focused on RT; (iii) lunchtime fitness sessions; and (iv) Web-based smartphone apps. The primary outcome was muscular fitness (MF) and secondary outcomes included body mass index, RT skill competency, flexibility, physical activity, self-efficacy, and motivation. Assessments were conducted at baseline, 6 months (postprogram; primary end point), and 12 months (follow-up). Outcomes were assessed using linear mixed models, with three potential moderators tested using interaction terms (and subgroup analyses where appropriate). Results: For the primary outcome (MF), a group-time effect was observed at 6 months for the upper body (2.0 repetitions; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.8-3.2), but not the lower body (-1.4 cm; 95% CI, -4.7-1.9). At 6 months, there were intervention effects for RT skill competency and self-efficacy, but no other secondary outcomes. Effects for upper body MF and RT skill competency were sustained at 12 months. Despite overall no effect for body mass index, there was a group-time effect at 12 months among students whowere overweight/obese at baseline (-0.55 kg·m-2; 95% CI, -1.01 to -0.08). Conclusions: The school-based RT intervention resulted in immediate and sustained improvements in upper body MF and RT skill competency, demonstrating an effective and scalable approach to delivering RT within secondary schools.]]> Thu 19 Mar 2020 17:51:33 AEDT ]]> Mothers and teenage daughters walking to health: using the behaviour change wheel to develop an intervention to improve adolescent girls' physical activity https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43292 Thu 15 Sep 2022 12:44:25 AEST ]]> Adolescent abortion in 11 high-income countries including Australia: towards the establishment of a minimum data set https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36615 Thu 14 Apr 2022 11:05:35 AEST ]]> Trajectories of alcohol-induced blackouts in adolescence: early risk factors and alcohol use disorder outcomes in early adulthood https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:49317 Thu 11 May 2023 14:53:09 AEST ]]> Evaluation of a school-based health and well-being program for adolescent girls https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55558 Thu 06 Jun 2024 13:01:36 AEST ]]> All disabilities are not created equally: stigma associated with parenting an autistic child who behaves aggressively https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55550 Thu 06 Jun 2024 09:39:21 AEST ]]> Association between Australian adolescent alcohol use and alcohol use risk and protective factors in 2011 and 2014 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:34413 Thu 04 Nov 2021 10:38:35 AEDT ]]> Transitioning from adolescent to adult mental health services: an integrative literature review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:41450 Thu 04 Aug 2022 09:55:22 AEST ]]> Mediating effects of resistance training skill competency on health-related fitness and physical activity: the ATLAS cluster randomised controlled trial https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23923 Thu 03 Feb 2022 12:19:47 AEDT ]]> Parent hazardous drinking and their children's alcohol use in early and mid-adolescence: prospective cohort study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:47847 Thu 02 Feb 2023 16:26:00 AEDT ]]> The sexual behaviours of adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years involved with the juvenile justice system in Australia: A community-based survey https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42689 Thu 01 Sep 2022 08:59:19 AEST ]]> Validity of short food questionnaire items to measure intake in children and adolescents: a systematic review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31358 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:44:35 AEDT ]]> Effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in child obesity: systematic review with meta-analysis https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:13804 2, 95% confidence interval [CI] −2.18 to −0.32) and BMI z score (−0.10, 95% CI −0.18 to −0.02). Mothers consistently more often supply their daughters with alcohol than their sons, [Wave 5 OR 1.77 (1.53,2.05)], while mothers less often supply sons than their daughters, [Wave 5 OR 0.82 (0.71,0.95)]. Mothers’ supply of alcohol to daughters predicts substantially increased odds of daughters binge drinking, [OR 1.67 (1.10,2.53)] and experiencing alcohol related harms, [OR 1.65 (1.10,2.48)].
